Why Your Mindset is the Key to Unlocking Business Growth
If you’ve ever felt like you’re spinning your wheels in business—doing all the “right things” but still not getting the results you want—this one’s for you.
We recently had an incredible discussion in the MDA community with mindset and messaging coach Nicole Frazier, and let me tell you… it was eye-opening.
If you’re an interior designer (or any creative entrepreneur, really), you know the highs and lows of running your own business. One day, you’re closing deals and feeling unstoppable. The next? You’re questioning everything.
📉 “Why isn’t this working?”
📉 “Do I even know what I’m doing?”
📉 “Maybe clients just aren’t spending right now.”
Sound familiar?
Here’s the truth: It’s not your strategy that’s failing. It’s your mindset.
Nicole broke down how our subconscious mind runs the show—95% of our thoughts, habits, and behaviors come from deep-seated beliefs formed in childhood. That means:
👉 If you believe money is hard to make, you’ll subconsciously block success.
👉 If you doubt your worth, your clients will pick up on it (even if you’re “saying the right things”).
👉 If you think no one is hiring, your brain will look for proof to confirm that belief—ignoring all the opportunities right in front of you.
Here’s where it gets even more interesting…
Have you ever worked with a client who seemed ready to invest but then ghosted you? Ever wondered why some designers close luxury clients with ease while others struggle?
It’s not luck. It’s mindset.
Your energy, confidence, and even the words you use all communicate way more than you realize. If there’s any hesitation in your voice—any subconscious doubt—your clients will feel it. And when people sense uncertainty, they hesitate, too.
One of the biggest “AHA” moments from our chat was realizing that procrastination, lack of motivation, and even self-doubt aren’t personality traits—they’re symptoms of subconscious fear.
Your brain is wired to keep you safe—and if it thinks scaling your business means more stress, more work, or potential failure, it will throw up roadblocks in the form of:
🚨 Overthinking every decision
🚨 Avoiding high-value opportunities
🚨 Telling yourself “now’s not the right time”
The solution? You have to work on your mindset the same way you work on your business strategy.
The good news? Mindset shifts don’t take years of therapy. There are fast, actionable ways to reset your brain and break through those limiting beliefs—without forcing yourself into burnout.
The way you talk about your business matters. If you catch yourself saying:
🚫 “Clients aren’t hiring right now.”
🚫 “I don’t know if I can charge that much.”
🚫 “I’m just not good at sales.”
STOP. Rewrite those statements:
✅ “High-end clients are investing in designers who confidently present their value.”
✅ “I offer a premium service, and the right clients will recognize that.”
✅ “Sales is simply building trust and solving a problem for my ideal client.”
When doubt creeps in, disrupt it—physically. Nicole recommends a technique called EFT tapping (which has been scientifically studied for PTSD, anxiety, and mindset shifts).
It’s as simple as tapping certain acupressure points while saying something like:
💡 “Even though I feel uncertain, I trust myself to handle this.”
💡 “I am confident. My dream clients are already looking for me.”
It might sound odd, but I’ve personally used this and—no joke—it instantly shifts my energy when I’m spiraling.
Your brain is constantly scanning for “proof” that your beliefs are correct. So if you believe “clients aren’t spending,” your brain will only notice things that confirm that.
Instead, start looking for evidence that your success is inevitable:
✅ Follow designers who are killing it in their niche.
✅ Listen to podcasts with entrepreneurs who’ve scaled without hustling harder.
✅ Surround yourself with a community that reinforces possibility, not fear.
This chat made one thing super clear: It’s not about the next strategy, the next marketing hack, or the next new offer. It’s about YOU.
If you’re struggling to attract dream clients, scale your business, or break past a certain income level, ask yourself:
🔥 What subconscious beliefs are holding me back?
🔥 How am I unintentionally blocking my own success?
🔥 What can I do TODAY to shift my mindset?
The most successful designers aren’t just talented—they’ve mastered their mindset.
